Ah yes very good points. I also use my home server for backups. Using ssh I do pull backups via remote scripts and rsync on my production sites. I also keep a live daily backup and weekly snapshot that I sync to my amazon s3 account.

I'm not using it as a file/media server at the moment but that would be handy now that you mention it.

A few more things:

* Backup server (I have a rsync script syncing my home folder to my server - anytime, anywhere)

* File/Media server (Attach your usb drive to the server and share it through SMB/AFP/WebDav)

I love the idea of the (a)sync function calling. Having a separate error channel looks fine too.
